Dishwasher.
I waited until the girlfriend was out of town and then used her dishwasher.

I own an auto repair shop so I use the parts washer tank. Still a lot of scrubbing, but keeps the mess in one place. Works great on kits too. The Yugos were the worst, that stuff took twice as long as any other kit.

Sounds like a good idea. Did the dishwasher smell at all like oil when you were done? I'd get nailed if that happened.

There wasn't anything that I noticed when I was done. I did run it through another cycle empty "just to make sure".

Wiped down the outside with G96 3 in 1 gun oil and a rag. Took em apart and did the same on the inside and springs. All said and done took me 2 beers to do it.

I took them all apart and scrubbed them with a sink pad in hot soapy water, i cleaned the followers, floor plates and bodies this way. The springs i just lined them up and sprayed brake cleaner on them. I dried them all with the air compressor and reassembled them. McM

Big hint for removing cosmoline on surplus rifles/these mags. Brake cleaner guys. Spray it on and wipe it before it dries. Not a spot of oil left on any of my mags...until I CLP'd the springs...

I recently bought a unissued Yugo SKS covered in hardened cosmoline.
A half gallon of gas in a big bucket, a few hours of alternate soaking and scrubbing the field stripped components with an old tooth brush did the trick. Softened and melted it off. I have an automotive parts cleaning tank in the shop but didn't want to contaminate it with the shear volume of cosmo on that gun. The firing pin needed extra help as the gas wasn't penetrating into the goo there. A good penetrating oil did the trick. I wiped everything down with Ballistol when done and she looked great. Shot great too! That contaminated gas was trickled out over about 100' of fence to kill weeds. A little bit goes a long way there. |

Yeah, I think there was a 55 gallon drum full of cosmo in my 59/66. I used a steam cleaner, and then solvent soaked rags to get it all off.

Would a small steam cleaner work? The ones used for cleaning around your sink and stuff?

I immediately disassemble them, soak everything in gasoline, scrub them with a steel brush, and wash them with antibacterial soap. Then, I only ever handle them with surgical gloves. Just kidding. Whats on there that a shop rag won't wipe off? |

Mineral spirits on a rag.
For C&R guns use a nylon brush and the mineral spirits in a wallpaper tray. |

Steamers do work, I have tried an old oven too, it worked pretty well(just have a pan to catch the stuff in). But the steamer I bought at Sears works good, I even use it to clean guns, very handy for tight spots and no pile of Q-tips left when I'm finished.

The small hand held steam cleaners work great for this. I can't remember how many Albanians and Yugos I've cleaned with mine. The dishwasher may be more handy for mags though.

For true cosmolene I have had good luck with boiling the item (metal parts, webbing, leather, wood, whatever) in plain boiling water. Boil for a couple minutes, remove, wrap in big terry-cloth towel (be careful-still hot) and air dry til cool then hit metal with WD-40 followed by CLP. Leather should get some sadle soap or mink oil to kep the leather from cracking. This metod has worked well for me to clean up Yugo 59/66 parts particularly the bolt assembly. I don't take it apart I just use the above method. I make sure to completly dry the bolt (warm oven).
