A Cincinnati police officer came face to face with
a loaded assault rifle downtown overnight, News 5's Candice Hunter reported.
Police said 46-year-old Lance Cunningham was waving the gun while standing in the intersection of Vine and Green streets about 10 p.m. Monday.
He was standing outside an SUV with a 7-year-old in the backseat, police said.
Sgt. Jim Perkins said he was alerted by several people running from the area.
"When I got up to the corner, I could see the silhouette of him outside the vehicle holding an
SKS assault rifle. He was facing toward me with the vehicle behind us," Perkins said.
Police said Cunningham squared off at Perkins, then got into the SUV and took off, throwing the rifle, crack and marijuana out the window. He led police through Over-the-Rhine and downtown until police caught him with stop sticks at Fourth and Vine streets.
Police said
they found lots of ammunition and a loaded clip in the SUV.Perkins was counting his blessings.
"Being a police officer, it's like a roller coaster ride with adrenaline sometimes," Perkins said. "The guy could shoot you or shoot somebody else."
Cunnigham was charged with felony drug possession, drug trafficking, having weapons while under disability, carrying a concealed weapon, failure to comply and no driver's license.
