What is the deal with the brown tinted finish on my SAR1? I don't think it is rust. Any input?

It may be cosmoline.  It's a preservative used to keep guns from developing rust.

Probably unrelated, but it's rumored that the hammer-monkeys at Century are prone to flinging fecal matter at each other.
