Since you have a 1/7" barrel, go heavy.
69gr, 75 gr, 77gr. www.ammoman.com has Federal Match ammo that uses the 69 gr. and 77gr. Sierra Open Tip Match (OTM) that will work great. I looked at Widners and they don't have the Hornaday. You might try Midway. Looks like K-Var's got plenty of mags. www.k-var.com/product.asp?0=202&1=204&3=12 |

the 1/7 twist is what is currently used by the M16s and M4s used by the US military. The twist is great for heavy bullets stay with either 68, 75, 77 grain.

Look for Black Hills MK262 ammo. It's 77gr OTM ammo. I dont think it is available anywhere else except Cabella's. Also look for Hornady 75gr. TAP. Either of these will be very high quality, accurate, fragmenting ammo. Very good for personal defense.

no offense, but isn't feeding expensive 77gr match rounds to an AK like pearls to swine? h.gif
I think wolf or surplus would work fine. Maybe spring for hollowpoints. |

You base this opinion based on what information, testing, real world result? Do you know what sort of terminal ballistics Wolf ammo has, even the HPs? I'm not surprised if you dont. Because it sure doesnt have much. Do you know what terminal ballistics MK262 or TAP ammo has? If not, find out.
Do you put ball ammo in your self defense pistol? If not ball, do you use the cheapest HP's you can find just because your gun will shoot them? Anything you shoot will probably cycle, but is that all you are looking for in your ammo? |

sounds like "home defense" ammo. "SHTF ammo" for me at least, is whatever i can get the MOST of, for the CHEAPEST, that is reliable, and will survive storage. ya know...for the ZOMBIE-pocalypse. |

Hollow point in rifle rounds is pointless. Rifle rounds, especially the .223/5.56 round, rely on speed and fragmentation. Pistol rounds, because they are traveling so slow, rely on expansion for damage. Stick with ball for rifle rounds. Read the ammo oracle it will answer your questions.
And two magazines is not SHTF ammo, sounds more like home defense ammo. |

Yup, and I agree with what Jicky said......Federal XM-193 is available by the case load and is pretty damn effective for ball ammo. |

Can't speak for the Federal ammo. But my 1/7 barrels shoot Winchester Q3131A , really well at 100 yards. It is the 55 grain stuff. I paid $150 / 1000 rnds. That was a year ago. I don't know prices now. It was also at the NATC gun show. Classic Pawn. I think a few box's of the TAP suff to fill up 2 or 3 mags and then a Case of ammo for the supresive fire and Holy Moly SHTF.... I would stick with the proven stuff. Fed or Winnie ...... And use the Wolf for your range plinking..... IMO WarDawg

75gr Hornady TAP is one of the best. It is extremely hard to find right now. Do not get any of the lighter TAP rounds as they are no better than a varmint load. Expected In-Stock: 10/17/2005 |
