I'm a little bit confused here, maybe someone can help.  I keep hearing that the bare Armory receivers are the best domestic receivers made, and on the other hand I keep hearing that their built rifles are shit.  What am I missing?

I think you pretty much summed it up. They do have good receivers, and the Tantal kit I got from them looked to be unfired, but they build a questionable rifle. If you have a kit, or want a kit - they have what you are looking for.....But If you want a complete AK, look elsewhere.
