I'll start us off. The following groups were shot with my AK-47 SAR-1 with stock iron sights and Wolf ammuntion.

In the first two, I bench rested and shot from 50 yards. I fired 30 rounds at each target. Groups were between 4.5-6.5 inches.

In the third, I shot offhand standing from 50 yards. I fired 50 rounds at the target, of which 41 hit the target. The grouping (on paper) was about 10 inches.

In the fourth, I shot bench rested from 100 yards. I fired 30 rounds, of which 23 hit the target. It is difficult to determine the grouping due to the wide spread, but I'd say about 14 inches. Keep in mind that by this time, I had already fired a couple hundred rounds so the barrel was pretty hot.

Summary:

At 50 yards, whether benchrested or offhand, it was relatively easy to hit a 1-square-foot target.

At 100 yards, benchrested, it was relatively easy to hit a man-sized target with an AK-47.

I would estimate the maximum range at which I could hit a man-sized target consistently with an AK-47 is 200 yards.

I don't group, I pattern. And not even on the target, mind you, but on the dirt berm.  5-10 FT above the target.

Ok, shot this critter from the bench at 100 yds. with just elbows rested and the shoot and guess methoud. Issue sights. Russian Type III UF with Wolf HP.

These are both on 12.25" wide x 12.5" high (torso) silhoutes.

I think that this was about 120 rounds (maybe more) from 50 yards with my SAR-1:

In the early 90's I had an FFL and sold literally tons of MAK 90's at gunshows in Ohio.  I considered them to be merely bullet hoses not capable of any meaningful accuracy.  

One time I had a guy come back to me with (almost) tears in his eyes.  He said that a few months ago he bought an AK from us and shot it at 100 yards.  The best group he could do was a trashcan lid at 100 yards.  He was heartbroken that his $200 AK with el-cheapo surplus ammo didn't shoot better.  He told his uncle or some relative of his anguish.  The relative did a crown job on the muzzle and the damn cheap ass MAK 90 shot a 2" group (iron sites) at 100 yards.  He thought I walked on water for selling such a great rifle so cheap.

The moral of the story:  one small nick on the crown can screw your accuracy.  It's the cheapest first step to improve same.  Don't ignore the crown.

I get the same results at 50 yards benched with semi rapid, no bags and random ammo.
Also I've gotten the same results, semi rapid fire, bags, random ammo at 100 yards.
The same results at 25 yards rapid fire standing.
Iron sights of course. And with my SLR-101.

Oh! My bad. When I first looked at the critter's head, I couldn't understand why it was so round. It really does look like the profile of a baboon's head. But yeah, those long, curved-horns would do it too.
