I havent decided if i will refinish it yet, but here is a pic.
I kind of like it as it is. It has that battlefield look to it...

You're wood looks like crap.  Put a little work into it and make it look like the one I refinished with tung oil.

What's kind of cool about the buttstock is the knife cuts/small notches in the top of the stock.
I still have to make up a story about them.

Damn osonofa!!
You even have the same blue container lid on the top left corner.
Amazing! AK-47 symmetry!! CATCH IT!!

Beautiful, CFS sells battlefield pickup Rommie AKs for 450$...you probably made yours for a lot less.

Cheap stuff from K-var? I don't think so.

Maybe he just wants to replace that black cheap cheesy US grip with something that looks like it belongs there.

Kyarguy, watch your parts count if you change the grip to a real romy.

The kit is as it was received from Centerfire.  It was the "good condition with no cleaning rod"
version.  It is a worn finish, but it looks like it has never been fired.  Barrel is shiney like new inside.
Maybe it just rode around in a Romanian jeep for a few years and was never shot. Who knows.

The receiver is an Arsenal, left as is. The receiver matched the rest of the gun really well as
the wear looks, so im just going to leave it as is for a while. If i get tired of it, i may black park
it or Lauer it. I like a worn look to an AK. Makes it look like it has been in its element,
riding around on a truck or dragged through the dirt. These guns arent meant to be babied.

I will get a chance to shoot it tomorrow...more then.

i love the look, dont refinish it. worn aks are beautiful.
thats exactly how i'm going for mine, i want that worn and beaten look.
nice job.

i would change out the grip though, toss on the original romy and find yourself a mag follower or something to use for a part. thats what i'll be doing. its cheap and i hate to do it cause i dont like relying on mags, but well- it just looks better

ps. mine is gonna have the exact same carpet too. lol

Strip old wood with varnish remover (I get it from ACE hardware in a spray can) let it set for 20 or more minutes.  Use a plastic scrapper to scrape old finish off, repeat if needed.  Wash off residue with water.  Let dry and then sand with 120, 150 then 180 grit sandpaper.  Get all the dust off.  Steam any remaining dents if needed and let dry.  Stain with water or oil based stains to get the color you desire. Let stain dry completely.

Apply Tung Oil one layer at a time letting dry after each.  I use pieces of old T-Shirt.  If needed use 0000 steel wool after each coat has dried 24 hours to get out imperfections and give depth to finish.  Last coat can be rubbed with a stock wax to give a glossier look or even rub out with a lemon oil.

Mak,

The refinish job looks great.  I will have to try your method if i refinish it.

Going to the range tomorrow with it.
