well it has to be a ban version of whatever it is

I wasn't following the 74s in 2001 so I don't know what was out there

I would ask the seller what type of receiver it has and who built it.

Most likely an SAR-2.  It would be a good candidate for "unbanning" if it hasn't been done already.

I've got a Bulgarian AK-74 kit built on an OOW receiver by ORF.  Its the shiznit to shoot - I'm here to tell you.  Much more accurate than a 47, LIGHT recoil, and low noise.

EDITED:  Good job on the SAR-2 lance, it would be a great platform to convert

I'll get him to bring it with him one morning before the deal so I can see it.  I don't know that he will be able to figure out what I would be asking him...

When I see it, what should I look for?

Could you take some photos of it and post them for us to look at? It would be a lot easier for us to tell you that way.

Tim beat me
it could also be a WUM-2, CUR-2, or Romak-2

I'm not to familiar with what configurations for 5.45 were around in 01 but i would check for:

See if it takes the single stack 10rd mags or if the mag well is opened up for the regular high cap

Also see if the rear of the receiver has a circular cut on the end for a thumhole stock if that's what it has, some WUMs had that, I would personally pass if it did not have the usual flat rear of the receiver

but if it does take high cap and has the flat rear, and is Romanian, I would get that sucka!!

Just for giggles note what the muzzle looks like, if it is just bare barrel or has a muzzle nut.  Chances are if it has a muzzle nut it may be already threaded and the nut is just tack welded on the bottom.  It may be pressed on however.  If it is threaded it is probably the regular AK-47 threads which you could add a US made AK-47 brake.  If it is bare barrel then I am afraid it is turned down too much to ever put a muzzle device on.  See if the front bottom of your front sight base has the hole, or even has the hole and muzzle device detent pin sticking out, that would be good.

Also the single stack wouldn't have the dimples in the receiver like the receivers for the WUM 2, ROMAK 2, CUR 2 or SAR 2. The importer would be marked below the rear sight also if it's a WUM 2, CUR 2 or ROMAK 2. The SAR 2's are marked on the receiver. It may even have the upturned handle on the bolt carrier.

I'd pay 400$ for any 74 style rifle with ammo and mags.

I bought one AK sight unseen for $300...Glad i did...
Turned out to be a SLR-100H Milled Bulgarian gun.
Here's what it looks like now.

I wish i still had the "Before" pics.  Ugliest Ak i had ever seen.

Sometimes being in the right place at the right time is a good thing.

$400? Snag it. It's not the best deal around but a heck of alot better than what you would find at a gunshow of gunshop.

$400 for the complete package?

I would do it provided it is a functional weapon (ie GOES BANG)

Figure $100 for the ammo
So that is $300 for the rifle.

I would say buy it..
Back in 2001, 5.45 kits weren't around as plentiful as they are now.
So I would place bets it is a SAR2.
