I know the chinese drums are favored, but is there anything special about the chinese mags?

the majority of them have a flat back, no rib where the two halves are welded together.  the Polytech exports have chrome plated followers and witness/sight holes at 10, 20 and 30 rounds whereas the Norinco exports have blued followers and a hole showing 30 rounds.
they fit and function identically to combloc mags but i prefer them due to the cleaner feel of the smooth back.

Did/does the ChiCom army use both kinds, or were the no-rib mags made for the commercial market?

I'm not having a lot of luck digging up pictures of Chinese soldiers in action.

I like them better due to the lack of rib as well. Next to the Polish polys, the Chi-Coms are my favorite.

Me too, plus I bought a few new for $8 a pop at a gunshow.  Not bad for gun shows around here.

Does anybody know where there are photos showing the different styles?

I searched but didn't find anything. How much are the going for?

I have a few Chinese mgas - be glad to trade for rib back Europeans....
One is a PolyTech mag, others are Norincos.  All pretty much like new.

Robpiat-
Here you go-

Both are ChiCom mags.  The one on the left is "european style", with the halves of the body spot-welded together in a "spine".

The one on the right is the "rib-less" style, with the edges folded over and welded.

The Chinese mag is no more reliable than a non-Chinese mag.  To me, it's just another AK mag-they all work great!

I have never been too particular with the ribbed mags. Chinese are my favorites as well.

I prefer the European style mags over the Chinese ones. I've actually come across a few Chinese mags that wouldn't lock into an AK. I've traded off almost all of the Chinese mags I had. I'm down to one now, and wouldn't buy anymore until they back down to $3-$5 each.

haha, the reverse is true for me, but i own chinese guns :)
