What would you guys say would be the ideal range to sight in a SAR-2 (ak-74) for SHTF. This is for factory iron sights.

I was guessing around 200m, since anything more then that your really pushing the ak's accuracy.

I think any competent person could hit man sized targets at 200m with a ak-74.

100m seems a bit to low to optimize the guns flat trajectory, and you would be cheating yourself of the greater range the gun could give.

Thanks in advance.

Probably for civilian use for defense, in most cases, point of aim to your neighbors door across the street.  Probably won't be defending yourself from someone farther away than that.  More than likely you'd be shooting at breath smelling distance.

If you are a soldier at work, probably 200 meters.

If you just like long range plinking with an ak, shoot your rifle at different ranges and figure it out for yourself.

I sighted mine in at 30 yards which keeps the projectile within 3 inches of line of sight out to 240 yards.

I will be going to the range tomorrow. I plan on sighting my SEAKII at 50yds. and seeing what happens at 100 yds.....will possibly post some pics if hunt101.com decides to work.

So I am guessing that 200 meters would also keep it within 3 inches since 200 meters = 220 yards roughly?

I used this online ballistic calculation site to determine a good battlesight zero range:

www.eskimo.com/~jbm/calculations/traj_basic/traj_basic.html

I used 1.875 as my sight height, 60 grains, 2886 fps and asked for a calculation every 10 yards.

At 100 yards you are 2.8 inches high; at 200 yards 2.7 inches high, and at 300 yards  2.9 inches below line of sight.

Adjusting sights to hit at 30 yards is much easier than adjusting sights for corrections at 100 or 200.
