I am thinkning about getting a drum mag or two for my AK...I have never used one before.  Can anyone tell me...

1)  Are they a pain in the a$$?

2)  Are they reliable or do they jam up?

3)  Which ones are better than others?

4)  Who's a reputable source and prices them right?

Thanks!!!

Can't recall whether mines Romanian or Chinese, but it works like a Swiss watch. Personally I like the fact that it can be loaded for years with no ill effects, just wind'r up and bump away.......

they both work fine, but the chinese is superior in the way that you remove the back plate and load it that way, very rapidly.  the romies word fine but you load them one at a time.

the chinese can be loaded and stored with no spring tension, the romie can not be loaded without spring tension IIRC

I have several of the Chinese wind-up drums & I've never had problems with them (even the 120-round AR drum).

Thanks, guys...are Chinese still being sold by any major dealers or is this "buy-it-if-can-find-it" gun-show item kinda thing?

The latter, AFAIK...

The Romanian top loaders are truer to the Soveit design and seem to be more rugged, however they are more time consuming to load.

Chinese drums kick ass. I have a 75rd but I wish I would have also bought a 100rd back when you could still find them.

I have a Chinese 75 round drum that came with the weapon. It is very simple and easy to load and has functioned flawlessy everytime I have used it ( a lot! ), so I am very happy with it. I have never used the Romianian one, so I can't compair the two.

I have a chinese 75rd and a romanian 75rd and they both work flawless.

I found my chinese drum for $80 on gunbroker which I think is a good deal since most of them I run across are over $100

I still remember bitching about getting the scratch to buy four chinese drums when they were 29.95 or so. Kept them all fully loaded with no windup. Six full turns and they're ready to go. Still got them. Gotta remember to get some wolf heavy SP. LET THE (creatures that shall not be named) COME!

I got one Romanian drum, it sometimes wont feed 100%, never have a problem with 30 round mags.

I have had problems with improper spring tension durring the last 20 rounds or so, I have had to stop shooting and re-wind the drum.  Just a heads up on chinese potential problems.

Nobody is importing 5.45 drums because they don't exist.  Pretty good reason.

My (4) Romanians are a time consuming matter.

You have to do the challenge and see how fast you can load one.

SKS 10-round clips and the AK mag guide.. Pretty Darn Quick to stuff seven and a half of them in.  Of course there's the added fun of loading rounds to strippers, but my first x39 was an SKS, and ALL the ammo goes to clips before it goes into storage.  I normally load clips while arfcommin.

I have 3 chinese.  1 wouldnt feed 100% until I polished up my feedramp in my AKs.  Now it feeds all the time.  If you have to rewind halfway through you need to just add an extra couple winds in the beginning.  Also if you have a painted drum you should strip it and alumahyde, duracoat, gunkote or some other finish with a slick suface it.  2 of mine came painted and I stripped them down and molyresin'ed them up good.  A quick blast of spray on lube works well too.  Give them a little squirt, make sure to get some on the door where back of the rounds touch and then put 1 round in the last position it can go in next to the follower.  Close the drum and wind it 3 times.   The round should travel the whole drum surface and spread the lube out.  Its good for 3-6 months like that.  You can load it up and leave it.

Good stuff.

Yeah, if you have to wind the drum some more half way during shooting then it wasn't wound enough to begin with. That has only happened to me maybe once. My Chinese drum works great.
