Finally got around to finishing my "no-ban" project and taking pics.

My SAR-1.

Before:

After:

And fully evil. Don't even look at this one if you're a faint of heart, pantywaist, pussy politician.

I had Circuits install the gas block with bayo lug and thread the muzzle for the slant brake.

Then I added a set of Ironwood handguards so I could add the red Romy pistol grip. The Romy handguards are laminated but have all the personality of a chunk of pine. It was real tough to decide they needed replaced.

Mine went through this transformation. I really like your laminate furniture. Maybe I should have went that direction.

Original.

Refinished wood and baking lacquer finish.

Russian plum stock set with K-Var US pistol grip and US slant brake.

It's there. It just doesn't show up in the pictures.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I think I would have gone with plum synthetic furniture if the buttstock had been solid wood or came out looking like the Romy handguards. But this Romy stock had good figure and I decided to keep it. Plus it's a 7.62mm. That just seems old school/low tech.

Now if it had been a 5.45mm I would have gone all synthetic and tactical.

That's a future project.

This is a TEXTBOOK example of what can be done with the SAR series rifles.  This thread should be made into a sticky, for permanent reference.  Everytime some new guy posts up and says "is it a good idea to buy a $300 SAR-1 and customize it later?" we could just point them to this link right here.

Fantastic job Bob, excellent concept and excellent execution.  I also personally love the red pistol grips, I have one on my SAR-2:

How much did you have to pay to have the work done? My MAK really needs a bayonet. Bayonet and a threaded barrel would equal ALL the evil features.

It cost me $80 for labor. I supplied the parts.

I got them at Global/Arsenal if I remember correctly. I got the red pistol grip from K-var.

I'm not familiar enough with the Chinese guns to guess what you might need to mount a bayonet.

Mine doesn't have the place for the cleaning rod so I am not sure what I would have to get done. Wonder how much someone would charge to do a barrel swap? Because centerfiresystems.com has a mak90 parts kit that has a threaded barrel. I still want a bayonet if I am going to go through the hassle.
