AND I'm on a tight budget.  It MUST have the ability to mount an optic to the side of the receiver (don't like the gas tube mounts).  So, what would you guys suggest?

SAR-1 or WASR (or some variation of the aforementioned types).  Somewhere around $325 sounds about right.

The ultimak (gas tube mount) is SWEET unless your wanting a scope. I wanted a red-dot so I got the ultimak and I love it.

I think my next gun is going to be a high cap WASR-3.....223's
