Did he show you the courtesy of giving you a reach-around?The prick should have taxed his fees only for the transfer.

I would have told the prick to send it back, and found another dealer to do the xfer..
FWIW, I charge a flat $10.00 fee for transfers.. Hell All I have to do is log it in the book, and call the background check in... The amount they charged you is way more than most dealers even make on the sale of a new gun... |

The local transfer dealer here tells it like this:
You find Rifle You pay seller for Rifle I send seller my FFL I receive and log it in and you pay me for backround check only. BUT IF... You find Rifle You pay ME for rifle and I in turn Pay seller for Rifle I have to charge you sales tax, even if it's from another state And my transfer fee is $10 more because of the extra expense. He says it depends on who's name gets entered into the seller's book, yours or the transfer dealers. If it's recorded as a sale to the transfer dealer then you are charged sales tax by your local transfer dealer. So it's up to you to make the arrangement to pay for the rifle before involving the transfer dealer. |

I had a place want to charge me $2500 for a Class 3 transfer. Never going there again.

I used to sell class I firearms and knives to a guy who seemed nice enough. He got a Class III dealers licence a couple years ago and I thought that might be handy. I met him in a local gun shop and asked him what he charges for a NFA transfer.... $500. I thought he was "In the business of" having obtained a licence- apparently not.  Regardless of taxes, anyone who tallys up the charges for a transfer and it's over $75 with no out of pocket expense to the dealer, needs to re-check it or decline the transfer beforehand. I"m not an FFL but I know such a charge would certainly not make me any new or repeat customers.  Sly |
