What's the story with WASR-10s? For a blasting rifle, they ok? Are these the ones that have the "no high cap" mag well or something?

That Thumbhole is dirt cheap. Could you get one and replace it with a regular stock?

Single stack narrow mag well, accepts only 10 rnd mags. But can be modified, and often is. Requires 5 US parts to be hicap legal. Stcoks redaily swapable and can count as US if you buy the US made KVAR polymer, or much pricier US wood.

I think Campybob talked about how to open up the mag well by yourself.

I believe these are also available from Atlantic Firearms.

Its a good cheap way to try an AK, you can mod it later if you like it. The expense to make the mods and US parts required would be minimal.

So it looks like you can get a Wasr and then a new 22mm FSB setup from KVAR and have a decent AK ?

I agree. I saw the single stack 5 and 10 round mags dirt cheap somewhere recently... Classic Arms, 5's are $2.50 and 10's are $5.00.

I would upgrade the internals, plus give it a fresh refinish.

Oh, and if you keep the butthole stock, you can make it hi-cap without adding US parts...

Suspect the Romy brake is 5.45 only in 22mm (could be wrong, again

), so not good for the 7.62 WASR10 mentioned.
