If you only have funds to buy one, this will be your only SHTF rifle, only rifle for that matter, which caliber AK would you choose and why?

5.45

- Higher velocity

- flatter trajectory

- better accuracy

- lighter recoil

- further effective range

7.62

readily avalible parts and ammo.

oops. read it wrong.

I'd go 7.62 simply cause it's older and more "common" even though the only AK i have right now is a 5.45.

If money was no object?

5.45.

If it was Real World Monetary Concerns?

7.62x39.

Sorry, 5.45 is nice and all, but magazines and ammo cost a good bit more, and the price of .223 AK mags is ridiculous.

I'm with Mach1, 5.45 for all the same reasons. I have no problem getting ammo or mags for this little darlin, so I gotta go with it.

My thoughts exactly.

I like both , but I prefer the 5.45 X 39. The bullet is very effective against live targets and the recoil is appreciably less than 7.62 X 39 rifles. My Sar-2 is also very accurate too. I would grab my AK-74 and have no worries about its ability to handle a SHTF scenario. The Russians went to the caliber and they wouldn't arm their troops with a marginal weapon.

I really like the 5.45 but if I had to pick only one it woild be the 7.62mm x 39mm

5.45.   Lighter loaded.  Can carry more ammo.  Easy to find 5.45 ammo, what are you guys talking about?  Spare parts?  It's an AK.

I too like the 5.45 but for me, especially right now, it would be 7.62 for the cost factor. That and I only have a SAR1 and a Yugo SKS

Yup.

With (3) AKs and (3) SKS' so far... It's a whole lot easier to have one caliber!

My feeling is that 7.62x39 is the better anti-personel round at most realistic SHTF ranges. Its also a better round for medium game. Kalashnikov himself was very much against the 5.45 concept.

The 5.45x39 does NOT fragment like 5.56 (the "air chamber" in the tip does nothing to increase stopping power). The 5.45 does offer lighter weight, less recoil and flatter trajectory, but ask yourself how this will REALLY matter in any realistic SHTF scenario.

7.62x39 is flatout just a pretty hard hitter. That's why I myself prefer 7.62x39 over 5.45.

Neither,  SHTF bad enough I just go to work and pick up a pair of M-16's, one in 5.56 and one in 9mm.

Hard choice...... I like my SAR2 in 5.45x39 (especially after I got 74M/B attached) but it is still easier to find 7.62x39

So right now I`m voting for 7.62x39.......
