Is it because about the only way to get one now is to build or have a kit built?  I realize they dont look "like an AK should", but with ppl building tactical style AKs, it just seems like they'd be more popular.

Also, whats the difference in an AMD 63 and a 65?

65 has a folding stock . 63 has wood . As soon as September rolls around , I am going to try to get a 65 put together .

The AMD-65 has the short barrel and wire folding stock.

The AMD-63 has the sixteen inch barrel and full wood stock.

Shooting both of them from the hip is very uncomfortable on the hand holding the front foregrip, however, after you pull the weapon to your shoulder it feels very comfortable and makes you want to blast everything in sight.

My AMD-65 is being put together by InRange C2 on a Maadi Receiver.  I opted for the Harold Shin "fake" Krinkov Buttstock instead of the wire side folder.  I shouldered the wire folder at the local show and it was very uncomfortable on the cheek.

Very happy with my OOW rec AMD63. Under 4" groups, shoulders very well, so light I may resist the urge to put an optics rail on it.

Aren't  there any rules pertaining to the AMD's barrel length?  I think they are a bit shorter than the std 16" barrels.

I've got a AMD-65 built by Inrange and I think it's purty (in an evil sort of way).

AMD-65 has the short barrel and requires a barrel extension for legality.

AMD-63 has the regular AK barrel and is legal in length.

Here is my AMD-63 built by ORF:

I think the AMDs are kinda ugly too.

Next time you go to the show....pickup a AMD-63 and shoulder it..........it will all become clear then........

I think the AMD kits are some of the nicest on the market and definately the best bang for the buck. If your looking for an ak build buy one of these kits and then swap the furniture for something you like better (and add a reg gastube).

Besides......it's another varient of the AK and you can never have enough AKs.............

Thats a nice AMD ya'got there.  The flat grips give it a distintive look to it.

When the AWB sunsets this coming fall, do the rules for a shorter barrel still apply or not?

The AWB has nothing to do with Short Barreled Rifle's that is getting into NFA.

Could I just put the front grip and lower handguard on a regular AK?

Hmm, skeleton stock, front grip, rail on the upper, a nice sight....

I like the  AMD-65, it looks and feels a lot different than a standard AK, the reason it's not that popular is because they have to be custom made and would require a special permit since the barrel is under 16" inches, so the average gun owner wouldnt be able to get one, especially if your in CA.
