I have a SAR 3 that I haven't had the opportunity to shoot yet because I'm getting it refinished. I'll let you know how it goes.

Galil side folder .223.  Love it.

Just bump-fire it yesterday and today at the Hun farm.

I have a Saiga for a winter project, and it runs great in lowcap form for now. Metal work is great; looking fwd to the stock/fcg changes and hicaps coming soon.

Just shot my norinco 84s yesterday and a bunch of other AK's. For some reason the 84s always seems to be my favorite. No problems or failures and low recoil just cant ask for better.Mikepenn33, I saw your post on hometown and I'll be damned if I can find another 5.56 AK anywhere.Twice last week I went on an AK hunt and found nothing good. No good prebans or 5.56's anywhere in 100 mile radius of NE philly however if I do uncover anything noteworthy I'll be sure to let you know! And if you ever run across a poly underfolder with spike let me know.

My Sar3 is one of my favorites. You could convert a Saiga or get a Vepr. 5.45 is also very nice if you can't find 5.56. It doesn't make much diference to me. CB

I also own a SAR3.  Its a great shooter after the RSA FCG was installed.  Reliable and a great Car/truck setup.  Get the Wieger mags.

Edited to add photo.

Yup, have a SAR 3. I had a OD NATO KVAR stock installed on it. It looks sharp. It shoots nice also. I still don't quite understand the perception that the three AK calibers feel so different when shooting. All three seem about the same to me.....

You need to shoot the 3 calibers all on the same day to make a good comparison, brother.

Bro Greg, I've done that!!!!!I still don't see all the hoopla about the 5.45X39 supposedly having such little recoil. I have buffers installed in them, maybe that evens out the recoil. Dunno.......

I have a Norinco 84s in-transit to me that I bought.... Mods that are going to be made:

- Open up mag well to take the superior Wieger mags

- Convert the rear fixed stock to a Bulgarian side folder

- Add plumb or OD K-Var pistol grip/hand guards

- Refinish it russian style

I know alot of people wouldnt mess around with a pre-ban like that (mods that I mentioned above) but this is going to be a custom gun built to my specs that I will use and shoot.... maybe even depend on it to save my ass some day.

I cant wait!

Well my route is a hunter-style Saiga which will retain the front handguard (but with vent holes) and get a new buttstock, pistol grip, fcg, mag well opening. Cheaper at CDNN but easy to find for about $230 at shows. About $350 when you are done with a Russian 5.56 AK.

Had a few 5.56 AK's here.

Norinco 84s, SAR3 and Valmet M76. Sold the prebans and am currently restoring the SAR3 from 15 months in a Kansas Chicken coop. The M76 was my most accurate AK, often sub-moa for 3-shot groups

The 84s was never shot for groups.
SAR3 would do 2.5" inches before it was sent off.

I guess what I should have said was,
that I thought the 5.45mm has the lightest recoil of the other calibers.Depending on the build,of course.Gun weight, bbl length.etc.I like them all.......but especially the 5.45mm,they seem to recoil like a .22 rimfire.

I have a custom AK-102 from AK-USA.  Great fun, and great accuracy.  Highly recommended.

postban,
I concur on the accuracy of the Valmets. I had an M71. Easily the most accurate Ak I've used.

I think you should bring all your AK's to the range next time, so I can compair recoil

How hard are 5.56 mags to find?

Weiger (E. German steel) are easy to find, and work perfect in SAR-3s (from what I read) and work well with some mods in a Saiga .223 conversion.

Bulgarian waffle mags, while still somewhat available, are designed for the Arsenal SA-M5s and I believe work well in the others.

Weiger, $60 for a 4-pack from www.Interordnance.com.

Bulgarian waffle mags, check the EE or auction sites, as they are almost only available second hand.

I owned a Norinco 84s a few years ago. Sadly, I had to seel to pay for my SVD buy. Excellent AK, never gave me a single problem.
