it is normal for the century hammer to deform some. some more than others. all of the ones i have have what you speak of and i am not going to replace them unless they get worse. now i have read where some people have had some real bad deformation(mushrooming). i say keep an eye on it if it gets bad replace with a g-tech/tapco/global trades/kvar or a red star arms fire control group. all are good products.

Yep...the Century fire control parts are worth replacing. Very poor quality.

century fire control parts are case hardened...that is, hard to a depth of .015"-.030" and soft in the core material. the peining you see is due to incorrect case hardening...i.e. too shallow or not hard enough in the cased layer.
your hammer may last another 20k rounds. it may continue brinelling and strike the bolt stem instead of the firing pin. just keep an eye on it and perhaps pick up a spare hammer to stash away. the ultimate cure is a redstararms fire control group. they are properly manufactured. |

thanks for the replys..is replacing the fc with the Redstar arms equipment soemthing any gunsmith can do, or should I send it off?

My SAR 2 has roughly 5k rounds through it and the hammer is deformed badly. However, it still strikes true, so I am going to run with it a little longer(until I save the pennies for a Red Star Arms FCG).
Any gunsmith can install the FCG, but frankly, it is a job you can do yourself, even if you have minimal mechanical ability. |
