Personally, I say a Romanian SAR-1 would be your best bet. They can be picked up for reasonable prices and they are just generally nice rifles. The only thing you really have to watch out for is a canted front sight and sometimes a canted gas-tube. So make sure you give the rifle a good inspection before laying down the cash.

The market is sort of limited now. Sar makes a great beater or can fix up very nice. There are SLRs available which are very nice out of the box. I think FAC has either. gunsnstuff.net CB

I second the SAR-1. Might need a little TLC, but a good rifle for the money.

SAR-1 because it and the ammo is cheap, and 7.62x39mm is avalable everywhere. 5.45mm is a little harder to come by.

The 2003 SAR-1's seem to be void of all problems except for a little trigger slap.

I'm surprised there is not more support for the MAK90. These are great rifles commonly available in the $300 range. Add a US made stockset and a TAPCO G3 US made FCG and it's back in proper form.
And depending on how generous that bonus was, there is the Arsenal SAM-7. |

Assuming this is not a way to skip out on the SEAK option, and you want an AK now, Romy SAR or WASR is first value choice, followed by VEPR or SAM7S as first quality choice for off the rack AKs.
But my custom build just like the SEAK last year is my fave gun out of at least 10 calibers :) |
