This is not meant to hijack but how easily can an AK74 mag be converted to feed 5.56? Can it even be done? If so is it a perm. mod? Do they feed reliably when converted? Mike, maybe this will help you make your decision. If it was me I'd go with the 5.45 because it's more authentic. Good luck.

i like the 5.45. .223 was meant for nato rifles.
the ak-74 bakelite mags need only a little filing on the rear side (at the feed lips area where the bolt will strip the cartridges from the mag) and for maximum use of capacity, adding a .223 follower from robarms. they function fine without the follower, but are limited to 26 or 27 rounds iirc. |

Definately go with the cartridge the AK was designed for,5.45x39.Its a lethal cartridge,cheap and plentiful.Don't get me wrong,I love the 7.62x39 round but you want something different.I'd also recomend a build from either In Range or Ohio Rapid Fire.
