Pave, funny you should mention "Fly Boys". I was out on B&N yesterday ordering "Unintended Consequences" and needed another book for free shipping. The book I picked was "Fly Boys". Glad to hear you recommended it.

My dad's birthday was yesterday... He was at Pearl Harbor that day...he turned 18 the day before....

His other book is "Flags of Our Fathers"....he knew his father was a Navy Corpsman , what he didn't know until he got into his papers after he died was that "Dad" was one of those in the Iwo Jimo flag raising photograph. Hey, Jeep, give him my regards, buy him his drink of choice and send me the check. |

My hat is off to your father for his service. I was watching the History Channel today and learned they had another disaster at Pearl Harbor in 1944. Apparently a couple of LSTs exploded because of mishandling munitions and such. community.webshots.com/photo/67526047/74625902jryrRc I never knew about that second incident. dad was enlisted usn (but...he was NOT a seal!).
in the early days of the war he served in the north atlantic...convoys to england, mainly. he also served in the italian campaign. later, he was sent to the pacific to help with the island-hopping campaign. after mustering out on the west coast, he (along with other sailers, i'm sure) was ordered back in. he was sent to the phillipines to pick up dead and wounded. he returned, this time, thru the panama canal and was mustered out on the east coast for a second and final time. my father saw a lot of stuff no one should have to see. he said the kamikazi attacks were a nightmare, but that he feared the german u-boats far more (the convoy didn't stop for a ship in distress). god bless the usa. |

I'm glad to see some of us remember this date. wasn't to long ago I asked a friends son if he knew what happen on dec.7,1941. he didn't have a clue. as a son of a B-24 pilot i'll never forget.mmk
