Check this out!!
Service call of the month from a Baltimore Gas & Electric residential customer .. BGE received a call from a customer saying: "My power is out. When you come to fix it be sure to bring a truck with a tall enough bucket to remove the deer". "What deer"? The customer replied "There is a deer on top of one of the electric poles on Wilkes Rd about 1/2 mile west of perimeter Rd." The customer service rep tried desperately to pull herself together and not laugh in front of the customer and replied "We will dispatch someone right away to investigate the power outage. Thank you for the call". Upon completion of the call, the customer service rep proceeded to share the funny story with her coworkers in the office and they all had a good laugh. Well, lo and behold, the serviceman who repaired the problem stopped by the customer service office the following day with these pictures. Sure enough, the deer had been hit by a train & landed on top of a distribution feeder pole!    Ken RSA |

I led him more that I thought I should. Santa went into the engine out drill pretty damn quick. Heartless bastach just cut him loose from the harness to save his own fat butt. And sped off into the night and he wernt ho hoing sounded like he was mo-foing.

well...that's all well and good! at least you could have done a better job of tracking him and retrieved the meat!
i mean, come on man! how tough is it to get gps coords on a falling reindeer?!?! triangulate! now, some damn utility worker has got himself a free freezer full of meat! and he got PAID to go fetch it down from that pole! i wonder how fast that train was going? i've seen deer kicked...oh...maybe 8' up in the air by cars before, but damn! that sucker got some big air! |

Funny but this did happen to a bear last week in PA. The bear was feeding from a dumpster in back of a restaurant and was spooked by a dog, went up a utility pole and was fried by 19,000 volts causing the lights to flicker in the town.

What kind of deer is that? With ears like that? With hindquarters like that? Short, stubby, powerful hind legs?
Hey, it COULD be a deer, (Believe me, I haven't seen to many deer in person!) but to me, it looks more like one of the short tailed varieties of wallaby. I'm sure that SOME snow falls in Australia from time to time. If that IS a deer, would someone be so kind as to tell me what kind it is? CJ |

Wallabees and their cousins the Kangaroos have long tails. That is a whitetail there missing part of its hind legs courtesy of a freight train perhaps? |

Fair enough, if it weren't for the ears and the shape of the head. Still looks a bit un-deerlike to me, but what do I know? Being smashed by a train and thrown up onto a power pole (Maybe fifteen feet...wow!) can probably reshape a lot of you.

In many sparsely populated areas of the plains states, (Nebraska, the Dakotas, etc) ancient poles, lines, and glass insulators are not at all unusual to find still in service even now. Why invest money in upgrading these service structures when they do the job they're designed for, are virtually trouble free, and there's not yet any demand for upgraded service?
I guarantee one thing: the phone and power companies won't upgrade these lines until it gets to the point where it's the best choice for them from a financial standpoint. Maintenance vs. revenue. CJ |

Now there is something you don't see every day.
It does look like a Western state and not MD, though. That type of system exists all around where I live. I have some of those very same insulators on my workbench. |
