just an initial report. i'll add more after i strip and clean the old girl up.

date code is 'kmm = may of 1943. there is also an anchor stamped by the date code. navy or coast guard usage? who knows...maybe my father used this rifle at the great lakes naval academy during ww2! heheh!

the bore is dirty, but looks to be in good shape.

the bolt knob/handle is devoid of finish. bolt electro-penciled with serial number (a match to the stamped serial number on the underside of the bbl.).

the front sight is the military ramp and, unfortunately, it does not appear that there is a dovetail under this one. the rear sight mounting bracket/adapter is included.

the trigger is a bit heavy, but short and crisp.

this one has a 'military finish'. it appears to be some kind of blued bbl. and action. the finish rates a 'good' to 'very good', except for the bolt knob and for some reason the trigger guard is very worn (all other hardware attached to the wood is in much better shape...go figure.). the magazine well is almost 100%...perhaps a replacement part?

the wood is rough....rating a 'fair', at best. fortunately, it will clean up and refinish to 'good' or better as there are no cracks or splits and all the dings and scrapes are minor. some light sanding, some steaming and a pint of boiled linseed oil will get is back into a presentable condition.

cartouches include 'fja', the crossed cannons and '3g' in a rectangle (i wonder what that one means?).

the rifle is minus the magazine and rear sight (i have spares for both) as advertised, but did include the front sling swivel.

so far, i think is a $100 'bargain'.

and...you have to love a government that will fed-ex a rifle right to your door! no ffl required.

magazines run $13 each at my local shows for re-pops and $25 for original, used remington magazines. classic arms and numrich/gunsparts corporation both stock the magazines. numrich may also have the redfield 75 rear sight you need in stock.

the cmp will be awhile getting their sights prepped for sale.


trs, basically three requirements:

1. proof of usa citizenship. this now means a copy of your birth cirtificate. that's the only paper that works.

2. proof of membership in a dcm/cmp affiliated club. i belong to two that are. your club membership badge (with date of expiration of membership) or club letter received after paying your dues will suffice.

3. proof of marksmanship training (waived with a dd-214 or if over age 65) within the past 5 years. match scoresheets work for that...high power, smallbore, etc. ...anything that is proof of MARKSMANSHIP (not machinegun targets!).

one can present this info at the north store at camp perry, ohio or at the south store at anniston, alabama...or submit a mail order to the cmp like i did on this  (513t's sold out in 3 days at the camp perry store).

you gotta love a country and government that tries to ban guns on one hand...and ships you a garand right to your place of employment!!!!
