if you can get a big ass monitor and turn it off when you're not using it, then a emachine isn't bad since you upgrade it every 2 years.

hell yeah. the last one gave me great service...right up untill it died. they are cheap, slutty little boxes with ak-like simplicity and ak-like pricetags. i run a 22" mitsubishi diamond pro monitor at work...so i know a big tube when i see one (lordy, i'll have to check the res on that thing monday, but it's one or two up from 1200x1600). this little 14" (11.8 viewable) EiSYS brand monitor has been with me since 1991. i wish it had an hour-meter on it because it has logged countless hours doing everything from building boxes to late night gaming to searching the web for information and deals to sending countless emails. it's now outlasted 3 boxes. it has been loyal to me and i'll be loyal to it! |

You say Emachines run well? I am in the market for a new PC and I think I will look at one. I usually dont keep PC's for under two years. Usually every four. So if they last that long Im happy. |

Not a bad computer, but dont mention you have one in front of silicon geeks. Unless you want them to laugh at you, Im on a emachine 2386, and the video card sucks definitley, it has to go, I was out of computers for a bit, bought this one, is screams at you about the intel integrated graphics chip, but it sucks hard. Have to upgrade to even play the built in Solitaire game.

yeah, my priorities are oriented towards bicycles, motorcycles, guns, the ranch...silicon is pretty far down on my list of priorities. this is my second Emachines box. the last one (a celery 600 with 32mb of pc100 ram, cd read drive, 10 gb hard drive) cost 4 bones and lasted almost 4 years. that's under $10/month. this one cost 4 bones and has a 2.5gh celery, 40gb hard drive, cd read-write drive, 256mb of ddr ram. if it last 3-4 years i'll be happy. edit: mine is a model t2542. i'm pretty sure that's their 'bottom of the line' model! |

yeah...i gave up gaming after online play becamre popular.
i tried to run one of the new (read: requires a 128mb vid card, 8 gb of ram and dual pentium xeon processors) games on the old Emachines and it sucked badly. still, this box runs high-end cad packages very nicely. |

Buy a dual head video card and keep your old monitor and add a new one!
All real engineeering workstations have two monitiors! I would never use ArcView/ArcInfo without 2 monitors again! |
