Yeah, with the political climate making it so hard to guess what will still be allowed in the near future, I would make sure I had atleast one quality specimen of both models (and the accessories to go with them).
IMO, if one wants a quality factory assembled AR, the Bushmaster fills that space nicely, but I would not be upset with a Colt either;)
With any of the quality AR companies (Armalite, Colt, Bushmaster, etc), we are talking about $670-$800 dealer cost on basic weapons.
Just like AR's, the AK's are offered in many grades, and by many companies, with the Arsenal Inc SA M-7 being the current cream of the crop post ban production AK (IMO). There are lesser priced guns, but they really do not compare with the SA-M7's (except for maybe the Vepers). The SA-M7 is ranging at about $534+ at dealer cost, and even though you can see that they are less costly than the typical AR, they are not cheap. To expect to get 2 quality basic AK's, for the amount you may get for 1 quality basic AR, is too much to ask (IMO) :)
Make sure you keep one quality AR-15 in your inventory (or you may kick youself later for not still owning one);)
And also get yourself an SA M-7 (no scope mount), or SA M-7S (with a scope mount).
This will give you a gun that is built on a forged and milled receiver, a gun that has a forged and milled fire control group, a gun that is made using nothing but all brand new components (nothing at all from a previously assembled gun), a gun that did not need a mag well conversion, that is built by a company that is licensed by the Arsenal of Bulgaria firm, a gun that has a phosphated finish under it's black painted one, a quality American made stock that is made with the exact same German polymer that the Bulgarians use, and so much more ;)
Buy one soon though, because it looks like the prices will be going up on them. Arsenal Inc has already stated that their Bulgarian connection (Arsenal of Bulgaria) had to raise the prices on the Bulgarian components that Arsenal Inc uses, so they will need to raise the guns prices. Seems like another person heard that the price hike will be something like 7%, and while that does not sound like such a big deal, it would mean that the Federal Arms dealer price of $534 for a basic SA M-7, will go to over $570 (dealer cost). This will place the basic SA M-7 rifle at just about $100 less than a basic Bushmaster AR-15 (dealer cost).
As you can see, it will be hard to buy two quality basic AK's for the money you will get for a quality basic AR-15.
Maybe if you don't mind settling for two Century Arms SAR's, but I'd rather have quality, not quantity ;)
Many SAR owners may be offended by my saying that, but it really is how I feel about it. Honesty is the best policy ;)
