I'm leaving for parts unknown for the Army in 7 months, so I'm thinking of selling off my second AR and picking up 2 AK's. By the time I'm done with my Army "stuff" I'll probally be sick of AR's.

My questions are:

Am I stupid in thinking I can get 2 VG+ AK's for 1 AR if I trade?
Should I get a 47 or 74 model? I'm thinking 47

Anythign else I should know?

Thanks

as a former soldier myself, i say look at where you wana be when you leave the military. a few years from now these weapons may not be avaliable. ammo may be targeted by the left.
i love both weapon systems but have no doubt that the socialist parties of this country have every intention of disarming  the people of this nation.

The AK's are cheap, don't sell you ar, just save a little and get the AK's.

P.S.  I did the 'Army Thing" and did not get sick of AR's at all!

You'll probably kick yourself later but...sell the AR, don't trade, you won't get what it's worth. Take the money buy the AK47 and the AK74 and now the best part, buy 1000 rounds of ammo for both. You won't be disappointed. And, just as with an AR, accessorize, accessorize, accessorizerocko.

sell the AR's. I disliked them in the service, and still dislike them. Why? Ask the 507th Maintenance Company why! Er-I mean ask the survivors of the 507th. The M16-AR15 was, and still is, a piece of shit. It may shoot fine on the practice range; it may look good in inspections; But for the real dope, look in the Armys investigative reports of what happened to the G.I.'s who died because of jammed weapons in VietNam, and also in Iraq.(507th Maint.Co) I was in the Marines in Vietnam, a combat engineer assigned to Infantry company's on Operations. After 2 weeks there, I began carrying an AK. Nobody gave me any shit about it at all. Many of the Infantry units I served with also had people carrying the ak. So the troops in Iraq ain't the 1st US troops to carry and use the ak in a war. You wanna know why the AK wasn't adopted by the USA? Cause it wasn't made here, and it didn't cost $500.00 for each one.                     OJF

Yeah, with the political climate making it so hard to guess what will still be allowed in the near future, I would make sure I had atleast one quality specimen of both models (and the accessories to go with them).

IMO, if one wants a quality factory assembled AR, the Bushmaster fills that space nicely, but I would not be upset with a Colt either;)
With any of the quality AR companies (Armalite, Colt, Bushmaster, etc), we are talking about $670-$800 dealer cost on basic weapons.
Just like AR's, the AK's are offered in many grades, and by many companies, with the Arsenal Inc SA M-7 being the current cream of the crop post ban production AK (IMO). There are lesser priced guns, but they really do not compare with the SA-M7's (except for maybe the Vepers). The SA-M7 is ranging at about $534+ at dealer cost, and even though you can see that they are less costly than the typical AR, they are not cheap. To expect to get 2 quality basic AK's, for the amount you may get for 1 quality basic AR, is too much to ask (IMO) :)

Make sure you keep one quality AR-15 in your inventory (or you may kick youself later for not still owning one);)
And also get yourself an SA M-7 (no scope mount), or SA M-7S (with a scope mount).
This will give you a gun that is built on a forged and milled receiver, a gun that has a forged and milled fire control group, a gun that is made using nothing but all brand new components (nothing at all from a previously assembled gun), a gun that did not need a mag well conversion, that is built by a company that is licensed by the Arsenal of Bulgaria firm, a gun that has a phosphated finish under it's black painted one, a quality American made stock that is made with the exact same German polymer that the Bulgarians use, and so much more ;)

Buy one soon though, because it looks like the prices will be going up on them. Arsenal Inc has already stated that their Bulgarian connection (Arsenal of Bulgaria) had to raise the prices on the Bulgarian components that Arsenal Inc uses, so they will need to raise the guns prices. Seems like another person heard that the price hike will be something like 7%, and while that does not sound like such a big deal, it would mean that the Federal Arms dealer price of $534 for a basic SA M-7, will go to over $570 (dealer cost). This will place the basic SA M-7 rifle at just about $100 less than a basic Bushmaster AR-15 (dealer cost).
As you can see, it will be hard to buy two quality basic AK's for the money you will get for a quality basic AR-15.
Maybe if you don't mind settling for two Century Arms SAR's, but I'd rather have quality, not quantity ;)

Many SAR owners may be offended by my saying that, but it really is how I feel about it. Honesty is the best policy ;)

Sorry for yelling.

You'll be pissed if you do.

Just pick up the AKs.

Thank me later.

Thanks guys

I decided, from my own thinking and reading the posts, that I'll just pick up an AK at the next show that comes around. I'm not going to sell my AR.

If the Army would train all of their soldiers in proper maintenace of the M-16, then there would be fewer problems. The members of the 507th were not front line combat troops, they were cooks and rear area support personnel. And as such they were not taught how to care for their rifles because they were never supposed to get into any firefights. Do you think that they were ordered to check/clean their rifles everyday or even knew how? Do you think there are any expert marksman in the 507th? The only reason they even got into a firefight is because they took a wrong turn. All of the opinions that I hear about the rifle in service from soldiers over in Iraq have been positive and this is mainly due to preventative maintenance.
As for the original post, keep the AR and find you a SAR 1 or SAR 2. Aim Surplus is currently selling the SAR 2 for around $265.00 and a SAR 1 can be found for right around $300.00.

Yes, never sell guns, just save and buy more, unless you are somehow getting one hell of a trade.

Best thing you can do now is save up and buy a couple of SAR's from aim.

Don't start that shit again!

1)  The M-16 today ain't what you had in the nam.

2) Nobody knows what the hell happened to the 507! To say as if anyone knows is really putting your pecker on the chopping block for a future whack.  To say there problems were due to jammed weapons is setting yourself up for a big dish o' crow later on.

3)  The line troops had few complaints.

When you enter the service, you will find that aside from those snaggly toothed blank rounds, you have few if any problems with an M-16.

One of the dumbest things you can do is sell a known good functional weapon.

Save a few pennies and buy your AK.

i would put the AR in the closet with a light coat of clp and forget i ever had it.  then i would save my money and get an AK or two.  when you get bored with them buy something else.  before you know it you will have so many toys you will not know what to do.  needless to say there is no better investment.

Depending on what your AR is and what you can get for it, I'd say yeah, sell it if you can bring in a decent buck.  Colt HBAR?  Bushmaster VMatch?  What is it?  What can you get for it?  You say you have two ARs?  What are the configs?  Beauty of the AR is you can swap the uppers and have a very different gun, can't say that about the AK.

However, if you have two, I'd sell one, buy a SAR 1&2 and still have one AR left.
