I like the looks of the 7.62 Galils better myself, whether they are better or not.
Why not keep the barrel just at "16 so you can have the working threads? Would still be a pretty compact setup and you can switch out different flash suppressors at will. It would only be like an inch longer.
Either way, 7.62x51 from a short barrel like that will be a blaster, but pretty damn cool at the same time.
You are going to give up the light recoiling, quick repeating aspect of the .223, that's purely a matter of your own preference.
You could keep the full barrel length and have an awesome rifle also. The look good with wood furniture, a folding bipod and so on in traditional battle rifle form.
Watch "The Way Of The Gun" for some persuasive 7.62 Galil action. Movies have influance my firearms choices before when I couldn't make up my mind.
