Well... What are you looking for?

I went with cheap, ugly, reliable.  SAR-1.  I paid $300 for a new one in a local private sale.

I have bad news for you. Your fundamental premise is severely flawed.

It's impossible to buy just one!

Sounds like another SAR budget. Wholesale at about $280, so handpick with no shipping/local dealer fees tacked on up to $350 out the door is fine with me (335 is easy in Ohio). They are much better since 1999-2000, but still look it over for straight sights/gasblock/side rail, no more than minor hangups in the new action. Pick one of 3 calibers and a case of commie ammo.

I'll agree with everyone else that for a budget of $400 or less, pick up a Romanian SAR rifle. They are available in 3 calibers: SAR-1 =7.62X39, SAR-2 =5.45X39, or SAR-3 =5.56X45(.223).

Hey Citabria, I think you shot both of mine. They were 300 each when I bought them a couple of months ago. Both are Romanian. Just make sure that the front site is straight and look for the small cleaning kit in the butt of the rifle or in the box and the sling.

A SAR or Romak, maybe even a MAADI is what you want based on your budget.  Another possibility would be a MAK 90, if you can live with a butthole stock.  Converting it(legally) to a pistol grip will probably put you over your budget(unless you get a great deal on the rifle itself).

Quoted:
I bought an SAR-1 about a month ago-that's the 7.62x39 caliber one (the 2 is 5.5 and the 3 is the 5.45 x something or other commie version of 5.56) I paid $ 350, I could have gotten it for $ 280 plus shipping and FFL fee but being able to paw through four or five SARs at the shop was worth the couple of extra bucks.

SAR1 7.62x39
SAR2 5.45x39
SAR3 5.56x45

Agree with the price info, though. If you can find them locally for $300 or so, it's like paying a handpick fee, and saving yourself the need to ship one back if you don't like it.

Helped a buddy pick one out at Medina recently. Paid about 300 clams for a SAR1. Had to rifle through (Rifle through, funny huh???) about half a dozen till I found one with straight sights and decent wood. For a starter SAR get the SAR 1. Cheap ammo and mags. The later ones 2001 and up seem to have less problems.......
