i heartily recommend the sar series to biginners and enthusiasts, alike.
why? the price. the sar series offers the best bang for the buck. they shoot well, come equipped with the optic rail and century offers a one year warranty with them. they make a great platform to customize on. the problems encountered can often be fixed by the user, if he is handy with tools and has a modicum of common sense. the readily available upgrades and accessories for the rifle really do improve it as time/money becomes available. take the redstararms fire control group, for example. for $80, any trigger slap is fixed and you end up with a match grade trigger that improves your accuracy. |

My most used rifle out of 10+ (which includes Armalite M15A4) is my SAR1...

I like My SAR-1. I did go through a rack of rifles to find one that had straight sights though. I did the trigger fix detailed at

The newer ones have better quality control than the ons madein the late 90's. It is a great starter rifle like Campy said. Might have some trigger slap, both of my SAR-2's had it and the one SAR-1 I shot had it. Still, its a ten minute fix.
Mags are cheap, ammo is cheap, and you have no need to worry about reliability like you will with the AR. |

1. cheap to shoot!
2. fun to shoot! 3. easy to maintain! 4. conversation starter at the range (curious come to you)  5. brings out the fear when the anti's see it 6. if you get an SAR-1, you'll want an SAR-2 or -3

My first AK was a SAR and it made me turn to the darkside; so beware.
I love mine. You wont regret it.
