I'll probably be buying an SAR1 or SAR2 within the next few months. I may buy a used "package deal" from one of the many equipment exchange boards.

I notice that there are blued, and "bakelite" mags available for AK's. Frankly, I think that the bakelites are a little ugly. Are they a cheap alternative to steel mags? Do they have an advantage? (weight savings, maybe?)

Also, are AK mags caliber specific? In other words, are there three different mag types, for the 3 available AK caliber choices?

I started listing all the different mag types, and then I realized it would probably just confuse you more.

The common bakelites are mainly for the 5.45, but with a swap of the follower they will work in 5.56. Metal mags for the 5.45 are fairly pricey~$30/ea where as the bakelites are $5.

Metal mags are cheap for the 7.62, but the bakelites are expensive for these~$50 ea.

Buy the AK you want....mags will become self evident afterwards.
