I'm still debating whether I should sell my AK74 and stick with AK47 platform.

I've a few quality AK47s including registered full-auto Hungarian FEG AK47 (true unicorn).
Only have one NIB AK-74, and that's Bulgarian SLR104-51.
Also have bunch of E.German AK74 bakelite mags to go with it.

I've noticed that AK74's ammo price went up considerably after stupid 7N6 ammo ban.
Well, it's another $200 tax stamp to cut down the barrel and some work before I could bring it to krinkov spec minus full-auto fun.

Should I keep the Bulgarian SLR104 or should I sell the gun and stick with just AK47 platform?
I know it sounds stupid, but I just can't make up my mind...

Its your call man. Commercial steel 5.45 is still a fairly cheap round. Problem is,  it's no longer significantly cheaper than cheap steel 5.56.

If you have other 5.56 rifles I would consider trading the 104 for a 106. IMO it satisfies the 74 platform advantages while allowing use of both high quality domestic and cheap import ammo.

You wouldn't be the first one to have dumped the '74 due to ammo shortages.

If you don't need to sell it right now, I wouldn't. Not with the elections coming up soon.

Yes, ammo is my biggest concern and not sure its advantage over my AR15.
Also, I'm worrying about keyhole after cutting down the barrel.

It's just me but not interested in AK shooting AR15 rounds.

That's a great point too.
Not sure it will be importable at later time.

IMHO, a collection needs variety and shouldn't be a slave to small economic changes.

You state that your only 74 is NIB, so why would ammo be a concern if you have yet to even fire it?

Good point.

If I keep the gun then I'm going to shoot... I mean a lot hence the ammo price.

Yeah, I thought we gonna have infinite supply of 7N6, and it was too late before I could stock up. SNIFFS

I really, really liked my AK-74, and it saddened me to get rid of it.

It was a joy to shoot.

Sell post election if you must sell. you'll get more money out of it.

I'm having the same misgivings.  But the gun is so nice to shoot, I don't see myself getting rid of it.  When you price ammo in the three major imported bulk calibers (5.56, 5.45, 7.62x39) they all bottom out at ~ .25/round.  For me, it comes down to ballistics and I prefer the 5.45 for the AK.  I'm actually thinking of a 106 to have one AK in all three calibers.

Don't sell it, you could always rebarrel it in 5.56 and consolidate calibers with your AR's.

It's not going to keyhole on you, it's not a century barrel.

I've put off buying an ak74 for a long time. Just like everyone else, ammo shortage.
I finally decided to buy one. I am going to try 5.56 in the 74. I know there could be problems but...
Wish me luck

On a popular AK forum, the "74" represents both 5.45 and 5.56 guns. (they look the same and not many know what an ak-101 is)

You said it's "NIB."

Not shooting it with affordable Wolf ammo is gonna cost the same as not shooting it with even less expensive 7N6 ammo.
