I have a stock saiga 7.62 and want to put a red dot on it. I know there's the side saddle mounts. Heard bad reviews about them and would like some kind of co-witness. I live in ny so don't think can have full picatinnys. Saw the ultimak but says need conversion of stock handguard to fit. Couldn't find any DIYs on how to do it. Would rather have a forward mount like that. Got a dust cover one but that thing sucks bad way to much wobble. So please help.

Side rail mounts don't suck, overall they are the best way to mount optics to AK's. Read more here: http://russianoptics.net/mounts.html

Since you are only after a red dot then the Ultimak makes sense. With an Aimpoint style micro red dot the Ultimak makes a nice lightweight combo and is very handy.

The Ultimak gas tube doesn't need the hand guard retainer to mount so it will be an easy addition for you on an unconverted Saiga. If memory serves you will need the M1-B version. I haven't used the Ultimak lower HG but that will probably need the HG retainer.

You should be able to do this after some modification to your stock HG, although I confess it's been a while since I've converted a Saiga:

Check out the TWS Dog Leg, it is an aluminum railed topcover that will allow you to co witness RDS. It is much better than those standard AK topcovers with rails attached that you have now.
The Ultimak is the way to go for a forward mount and co witness, if that is what you seek; only downside is that it does get hot and so will whatever optic you put on it. This will also factor in to weapon manipulation, as you don't want to touch it.
There is also the option of the US PALM handguard that allows for excellent co witness.

Just got the Attero mount for mine, by FAR the best mounting system i've tried, no bulk, good balance, co-witness, and not too crazy expensive either.

The website is kinda low tech, better now than it was, but the owner answers e-mails personally and the product is solid.
