Looking to purchase first AK.  Have a couple AR's, but am pulled to try dark side.  Which caliber do you recommend: 5.45, 7.62, or 5.56?  Thank you.
which is more attainable here in U.S., 7.62 or 5.45??

It's really up to you.  If you want to stay within your AR caliber go with 5.56 / .223.  I like the 7.62x39 myself which is a very affordable caliber.  I've noticed alot of people sway towards the 5.45 lately.  I haven't looked at it's pricing, but I imagine it's just as cheap as 7.62 if not cheaper.

For availability, go with 7.62 and moderately priced ammo. Availability and ammo compatibility with your ARs, 5.56. For cheap ammo you have to buy in bulk, 5.45.

Mags also cost half as much for the 7.62 versions.

5.56 and 5.45 will generally be a bit more accurate and will be easier to control.

i personally decided to buy another 7.62x39 rifle instead of a 5.45x39 rifle at the moment due to kvar's arsenal sgl21 sale.  quality rifle for $500.   i even bought 4 tins of 5.45 and 12 mags for in anticipation to buy a 5.45 rifle, but i can't pass up the sgl21 deal.

I'd go with 7.62.

5.56 AKs are considered to generally be less reliable than either of the Russian calibers.

5.45 is fun and cheap, but IMO, it doesn't do anything 5.56 can't.

With that said, I'm trying to sell my 5.45 AK right now, and I'm consolidating my AKs to 7.62 only for those reasons.

None of them are bad choices, it's mostly in personal preference. Some people have different perceived needs for their AKs.

5.56 caliber AK magazines are NOT standardized so some will not work well in some rifles. They're also more expensive since there are no surplus magazines that are readily available.

Yep, I had to contour a pin in my SAR3 to get it to take Bulgy mags, but it uses those and Weigers interchangeably now without issue (unless I pull dirt all over the gun)
