I've had three different people ask me what I would recommend for a "just in case" rifle. While I love my ARs, I'm thinking if I had to start from scratch, have minimal rifle experience (they all have some... country folk, not city dwellers here) and don't want to spend much more than $1000 to maybe $1500 including ammo and mags... and I keep thinking SAIGA 7.62 or something like this:

What would you suggest?

Also.. what ammo would you suggest if someone wanted to purchase all this right now. If someone had $1500 burning a hole in their pocket, what package (rifle, mags, ammo) would you suggest that is available right now?

TIA!!!

You are posting in a day of $599 CMMG bargain bin rifles and $799 Russian 5.45 AKs.  These are the "good ole days."  Right now.  Get either one, with all the mags, ammo and accessories required and these folk will be very well armed.

What good is all that ammo with 1 magazine?

Get 1 crate, and a tin and spend the rest on magazines. You can find bakelites for about 20 dollars, I'd just get a couple 4 packs, then you got pouches ready for carry if SHTF.
