What Ak would you choose?  If you could only have one?

The one I own ATM. Armory USA build on one of their 1.6mm receivers and a pristine Romy G kit. IIRC it cost me about $450 including the kit and US parts. It runs like a top and looks good to boot.

the one in the front. I like the one in the back too....but that's another story.

Light weight, low recoil, very compact when folded, points great, fairly accurate, and shoots CHEAP ammo!  It doesn't hurt that I built it myself

My AKS-74 (Arsenal Bulgaria SLR-105).  Accurate, comfortable, light weight, and WORKS!  Of course, I'd have my Russian Kobra red-dot along with the rest of my tactical load.  I think it's the end-all of battle rifles.  Not to mention the AKS-74 I think is the best damn looking rifle there is.

For an all around SHTF I'd go with my AKSU no question but my 105 would be my second choice.

Both are fantastic shooters but the AKSU is handy, pointable and just an all around breeze to handle. I like 5.45 because of it's accuracy and how inexpensive it is, with the Aimpoint mounted it's easy to get hits all the way out to the 300 yards which ought to cover most scenarios. The G2 LED is a nice light, though I suppose if I were truly going for an all around SHTF I'd get something more suited for outdoors. The AKSU can be folded up and stuffed in most any small bag too.

I would go with a SGL20, Russian, original caliber, and mine is the most accurate 7.62x39 that I own.  I like the 74/100 series look the best when it comes to AK's.

Something Krink-ish.

I'd post a pic, but I'm still waiting for a tax stamp.  Probably will be for a while.

Yeah, I think TX-Zen has a good point.  I don't yet OWN my Krinkov but I bought it at the very beginning of the year and had it sent from MN.  This means I have to go through the process twice.  Waiting on MY tax stamp since June 18th, sent paperwork in at the end of April.  Total wait is nearly 10 months now.  I'm about to pee I'm so ready to get this damn thing.  First NFA purchase, by the way.  However, I've shot others and they are one damn handy package.  Ease of portability, accurate enough, and super-easy to handle.  No problems with functionality.  After all: it's a Kalashnikov!

Chinese Type 56 Vietnam bringback-

ETA-Why? Because it's the real deal(FA) and milled full stock AK's are my absolute favorite.

The mighty WASR, why pay for anything else?

Some good suggestions here. I would go with a AK47 and since it is ONLY one that you would ever own. I would NOT buy a WASR. I would make sure to buy a high quality AK like an Arsenal or Saiga conversion.

If only 1

Accuracy, reliability and size AKS-74u!!!   The 5.45 surplus does everything that i want in a carbine.  I can cleanly kill small game and mid size (deer) w/o an issue.

ALL great AK's...but I'd have to say either a Valmet RK62 or a Valmet M-76 tubefolder...

+1 or at least something made in China.... they are the closest thing to a Russian, but I think they look cooler with that underfolding tactical monopod!

Lots of pretty AK's. I am partial to FEG Hungarians.

Milled M70.

My milled M64 will hold me over until I acquire a milled M70 (fixed stock).

For SHTF, I'm grabbing my LMT Defender.  My AKs are strictly for shits and giggles...

Not quite - that's kind of a common misconception that gets spread around sometimes.

While they're one of my favorites, as well, they're very much not the closest thing to Russian (semi-automatic import or fully automatic military).

The Chinese Type 56 and Type 56-S  (both milled receiver versions) as many obvious and subtle differences that distance it from a Russian AK or AKS (milled receiver versions).
The Chinese Type 56 and Type 56-S (both stamped receiver versions) are even more "worlds apart" from a Russian AKM or AKMS (stamped receiver versions).

What could definately be said is, the semi-automatic imported Chinese Type 56 and Type 56-S are the closest things to the actual military-issued rifles available (as they were built in the same factories as the fully automatic versions for military production).

I'm thinking my Polish underfolder. I love that thing.

ETA - Why? Lightweight, compact, the folding stock is pretty comfortable, the gun runs flawlessly, it has a chrome lined hammer forged barrel, etc.

ETA² - Shit, I just realized this is an old picture before I got a Polish pistol grip.

I think an AK can be used in a SHTF situation just as well as an AR platform can. (Other than ammo availability from LE and MIL.)

Get the one that feels the best to you.

Never said it couldn't.

You're looking for something in my post that just isn't there.

Not looking for an argument.

Just didn't want the OP to stick to his AR and not get an AK.
