Since I own neither, I'll ask here for input. Either a CZ vz-58 for $800, or a SGL20 with plum furniture for $1100?? I can only get one

vz isn't a AK. The SGL is way over priced.
The market on AKs right now has dropped big time... there is some really cheap stuff out there. Check the market boards for deals. You'll save SEVERAL HUNDRED dollars. |

Looks like the psycho Obama rush has finally slowed down or stopped, hell have you seen all the sales going on right now? J&G, Aim surplus, K-var, its definitely a sign things have changed. Ammo is still wwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy overpriced. |

Which one do you like?In the past parts and accessories were harder to come by for the vz.And the rifles were expensive.That is not the case now.The vz has a few advantages over the akms.If vz's had been around at this price back in the day I would not have any ak's.Well fewer ak's.
As for the sgl20 I would buy a Saiga in 7.62x39 and convert it myself. Edit:Also keep in mind the where the ak was designed.It gets pretty cold in Russia.Not as much in the then Checkoslovakia. |

I'd get the CZ but then again I already have an AK.
Better yet buy the CZ and then do a Saiga conversion so you have both. |

I was just doing some research on the vz58 and I think I'm going to be going in that direction. I found some cheap($11-$13) mags and think it could be a pretty damn good AK substitute
So now, who has a vz58, and what can ya tell me about 'em?

I'd have to put my weight behind what the previous posters have said. I would buy an MAK-90, put a traditional stock and pistol grip. Then you got a VERY good AK, relatively cheap.

There are lots of good, much cheaper AKs to be had. Look for a SAR-1 and have it refinished and debanned (not a WASR). Pick up a sanitized East German MPi-KM kit from APEX, a NDS-1 receiver, a Romanian chrome lined barrel and have it built by one of the smiths. The MAK-90 suggestion offered above is sage advice.
I think the Arsenal is overpriced, but a SLR-107FR would be great for $800 or less. |

Go with the SGL 20. There are many much parts and accessories for the AK platform. Check Gunbroker, you should be able to pick one up for $800.00. |
