I just picked up my first AK- a WASR. Needless to say, I am less than enthralled with the wood.  I am sure this has been asked, but can the wood be refinished (or finished for the first time) to a decent level?  Also, who makes good quality black plastic furniture for it?
Thanks.

Very nice!  Gives me hope. How much sanding is involved? Thanks.

I like the solid wood over the laminate...

I generally sand until smooth using ~180 grit sandpaper.  Apply stain, let it dry, resand with 200 grit, apply more stain if necessary/desired, let it dry.  Apply 3-6 coats of tung oil with 0000 steel wool.  Done.

Just tried to refinish mine. Failed horribly.  Never refinished any wood in my life before.  Made a mess of it.
I'm replacing with black stock.

Describe your process and maybe we can help.

the good thing about wood is, you can always sand it back down. It's a bit forgiving, as long as you don't put huge pits in it.

Wood is very simple to finish or refinish. Here are some of my recent projects:
Egyptian Maadi before (I don'thave pics of the handguards, but they looked like shit -

After -

Bulgarian before -

add unfinished Ironwood  for a Hungarian AK (and slightly modified)-

after -

Even a Romanian can be made to look nice -

This one is just as shiny, but I angled the wood so it would reflect less)

even one that was run over by a truck and thoroughly abused..

to this...(take a good look at the last pic, it's the same wood in the handguards)
