I have no clue about AK's. I'm an AR snob and long-time avid shooter.
I'm thinking of picking up an AK but I'd like a preban.

Can somebody fill me in on the "pre-ban" deal or point me to someplace that can?
I see oodles of "parts kits" from the 70's and 80's for sale reasonably(I think).

What constitutes a "pre-ban" AK?
How hard is it to build one from a kit?
What should I look for?

Thanks for any help.

Pre 94 is preban.A kit's build date doesn't matter as you will be using a new production receiver , so no folder, flash hider,or bayonet lug.If you have the right tools building them is fairly easy. You're probably better off getting a Saiga for $400 and converting it to a pistol grip configuration, as the kit prices have gone up a lot.

Know that building an AK isn't like assembling an AR.
You'll need tools.

And expect to pay premium prices for the pre-bans.
