i got a couple cases of 'golden tiger' 5.45 ammo for my ak74 at a show. the stuff works just fine, but i'm trying to find out more info about it. i've searched the internet a bit, but can't seem to find anything of use.

cool charts... too bad the webpage link isnt more informative

any knowledge about its quality? such as how does it compare to wolf, barnaul, etc... or if its one of those deals where it's made in the same factory as a few brands and just boxed up differently?

It shoots better than Wolf for me. Out of a WASR or a Yugo SKS, my personal rankings are:

Barnaul w/ marlboro man
Ulyanovsk/Vympel (about even)
Brown/Gold/Silver Bear
Wolf

I still go by the "whatever's cheapest" mantra though.

Nothing wrong with GT..I'm like Winston I like Barnaul and Uly better but I'm a ammo whore anyway, I'll stick anything in my barrel...

yeah, its an AK (SAR2 to be exact)... it'll eat anything, but i just wanted to know if i bought super-shity ammo or half-decent stuff... not like i'm going to compete with the thing or anything like that.

I bought some of the 7.62x39 from AIM last Christmas and it works great, I just wish you could still get it for $71.00 a 1,000

I use it in both my AK47's and AK74's .

Works great much better than Wolf.

I have personally fired over 1000 rounds through my WASR with no malfunctions. I'll be buying more. just my 2cents

The Golden Tiger brand is the only brand that Vympel produces. But I would guess that they are like the other Russian ammo mfgs. Show up infront of the building with a breifcase full of US $100 bills and they will load up and print anything on the boxes you want.

Yup. Steel case, steel and copper jacket, lead core.

Yup. Steel case, steel and copper jacket, lead core.

I sectioned a 5.45 bullet and found that the jacket is steel, with a copper wash.

The steel jacket is visibly thicker than the Barnaul 5.45, the air pocket in the tip is smaller also, partly due to the thicker jacket.

I got about 400rds from "The Firing Line" in Manchester.

The importer is in Manchester NH, as am I, but I had no luck contacting them.
