I just got a case of the new Golden Bear 223 62gr soft point ammo. It is basically Barnaul with brass plated steel cases instead of the lacquered cases. I put 100 rounds through my Bushmaster to check for function and it worked fine. Golden Bear is currently available in 223 and 7.62x39.

How was the accuracy with the Gold Bear ammo?

I'll try to do accuracy and chronograph testing later. I just had time for some quick blasting today.

How much does it cost and where did you buy?

Since I live in southern Illinois and have a FFL I picked it up at the importers warehouse (Zanders Sporting Goods). It is 9% higher than Silver Bear.

Not sure on 223 but AIM surplus was running 7.62x39 at 59.99/500 I think.

That's rather pricey for possible Barnaul made ammo. :(

No possible thing about it... its Barnaul made.

Good ammo too...
And the price is not bad...

IIRC "Bear" is made by several different manufacturers, one of which is Barnaul.
If this batch was indeed made by Barnaul, it's good stuff but still not good as the actual Barnaul ammo that is out of stock everywhere.

Your ammo test. It showed Barnaul made Silver Bear "Match" as being less accurate than Barnaul made "Barnaul" FMJ.

Granted there are a lot of variables to consider that can account for the few tenths difference, but Silver Bear Match, from your tests, wasn't as consistent as the equivalent Barnaul FMJ.

In any case, I read on AK47.Net that the "Bear" ammo isn't all made by Barnaul. There are other factories that produce the Bear series (Golden, Brown, Silver, Purple, Teal, Torquise, Fuschia, etc... :D )

You can probably ask Devil Dog or YODA from AK47.Net

And the other sure-fire way to tell is by using a Chronograph and testing accuracy. Barnaul tends to use a hotter charge, chronographing approx 2400+ fps muzzle velocities (7.62x39). Compare notes with data from other Russian import ammo and you can have some very useful data to tell which Bear ammo made by whichever company is the most desirable.

On this thread, we are talking about Golden Bear .223 right? If yes... and yes... we are, why talk about velocities you read on AK47.nutz about 7.62x39?

Oh, and BTW, I can say well beyond a shadow of doubt that the Golden Bear .223, in fact...any of the Golden Bear rifle ammo is made by the Barnaul Machine Tool Plant...

Hope this helps.
