Hmmmm ok, what do most people use when reloading 5.45? I realize this may be nobody since prices are so cheap.

Well, since the ammo is, at least the Russian and Romanian 5.45x39 that I have seen, steel case and Berdan primed... you can't really reload it. I have yet to see any Boxer primed, brass case 5.45x39mm... has anyone here seen any?

Very few people reload this round. Bullets must be swaged from .223 in most cases.
I can't really claim to know much on this. The thought to reload this round has never crossed my mind. I don't think many other have either. I will look into it and see what I find. |

Yasenovo also has a good point. While Russian made 5.45X39 can be reloaded with great difficulty and much wear on your dies, it really isn't worth it.
Ok, here is what I found. The .220 Russian. Here in the US it is called the .22 Waldog (in a slightly resized form). The neck is set back at a different angle using .220 Russian Brass. The bullet dianeter is .223. This would be similar to the old .22 Hornet round. Standard American .223 and 5.56 is .224 diameter in reality. This would still be too large. The case is based off the 7.62 X 39 round. It looks like you might be able to get away with it with some tinkering. Also, you will have to get the bullets swaged to the correct diameter. I believe this can be done, but it won't be cheap. |

OK, thanks for the research. Guess I'll just buy a lot of Barnaul. The idea came up when I started looking at what options there were for .308 and 7.62 X 54R.

The .220 Russian/5.56x39mm is a 7.62x39mm case necked down to use .224" bullets. The 5.45x39mm is a totaly different case from the 7.62x39mm and uses .221" bullets.
All 5.45x39mm ammo made has berdan primed steel cases and there is no brass cases made. Brass cases can be formed from 222 Remington brass by running them in a 5.45x39mm full length sizing die and trimming to length.
