How do you tell if it is corrosive stuff ?

Found two cans  (700 rds each) of what is described as Russian military , late 70 early 80 mfg, hollow point, For $55 each.  Should I pick it up or not ?

Ill look at some of it today and know more about the head stamp then. What do I look for ?

What do you guys use for clean up AFTER using corrosive ammo ? Anything special ?

Probably also looks like copper spray paint was applied. Unless under 7 cents a shot, pass IMO. Lots of good ammo at 70-80/1000 without all those nooks and crannies to worry about.

Corrosive is due to salts used to stabilize powders, and oil does not remove them. Ammonia neutralizes them and water dilutes. Sweets 762 and Windex w/ammonia are commonly used. But DO NOT let in linger a long time (over 5 min est) since it flakes away chrome bores (seeps thru micro pores and eats copper between chrome and bbl).

I'd get the best deal on Barnaul fmj or sp, or Silver Bear Match.

Gold or primer, non-corrosive.

Dark grey or Dark Silver primer, corrosive.

If it is military it is corrosive.

Primers, not powder.  Potassium chlorate which forms potassium chloride upon firing. It is a stable primer compound that does not destablize over long exposure to heat and cold I.E. it is Surefire.

I am confident you meant primer and not powder but to clairify for any third parties reading.

Water removes salts and the basic amonia neutralizes any hydrochloric acid formed by the reaction of the chlorine in the salts and hydrogen in the water to make HCL.  That is what makes mr. rust.
