Just opened a spam can of Chinese 7.62, labeled 1966. The ammo is packed in bundles of brown paper. It has red sealant at the necks of the bullets, and appears to be coppper plated or washed. The headstamp is 61 @ 12 o'clock and 66 @ 6 o'clock. Whats the story on the this ammo? Is it corrosive, AP, ect...

Thanks Brad

61 is the factory code.  66 would be the year. I would treat is as corrosive.

Is there any color on the tip of the bullet or any any other identifying marks?

I don't see any other marks on the ammo.
IIRC there was a website posted awhile ago that discussed AP Chinese ammo. I tried to find it but the search function won't let me search back far enough.

Thanks Brad

If it is all copper washed then the odds are that it is the steel core.  Not really a dedicated AP, but it does the job. I have shot them through RR tracks.  (spare ones, not at the RR)

If in doubt, pull one and cut it in half.  You should know pretty quick if it is steel or lead.

It sounds like the Chinese Steel Core stuff that I have, and it is corrosive. I wouldn't consider it plinking ammo.

Run it over a magnet.

That is not a reliable way to tell.  Most 7.62 X 39 has a "bi-matel" jacket.  Almost all will stick to a magnet.

Didn't even think of that. Tried it on a few mis-match .308rnds I found lying around.

I have a fair amount of the 1966 stuff also. it is corrosive and is steel core. THe Real stuff for AK's and Sks rifles. yes, not plinking ammo anymore since it is not easy to get. Save it for a rainy day, I guess or just test it on railroad tie plates with a few rounds . it will go through nearly  one quater inch at 50 yards . Pretty potent stuff.
