Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Refinish Bakelite?

I was wondering if there is anyway to refinish the bakelite handguards on my Tantal.  Could one sand the handguards with real fine sandpaper and then apply a clear finish?

sand yes...Clear coat NO....You will damage the bakelite with the clear coat.
Sand 800...then wet sand with 1000.....1600...then buff with a plastic polishing compound..

Flitz works well for a final polish on bakelite.  Also a buffing wheel attached to your drill works well with a polishing rouge for plastic.
