first off you will need
drill press
drill vise
c-clamps
punch

first clamp your rear block into the vise
put a punch or anythang between the jaws (just to help get a good bite on block)

now lineup your rear block hole and drill
and clap the vise to the press table with your c-clamps

ok now slide your rec over the rear block
and bring the drill down (no pressure you just want to mark the rec)

now remove the rear block from vise and reinstall in rec
move the vise and drill your hole

lineup the second hole the same way you did the first

now mark and drill the second hole same as first only this time
after you slide the rec over the block install a long rivet threw the first hole you drilled to get placement perfect

to do the rivets heres the tool you will need
airhammer (moded bit)
hammer
and chunk of 2x2 plate with divet

place you backing plate (2x2x1/4 plate with divet) on somethang solid
now set the head of your rivet inside the divet and tap (vary lightly) on the rivet with a hammer
no big swings here just alot of little 1's
till you get your rivet head to swell to the correct size

now take your airhammer and round it out to form the rivet
its vary hard to take pics of the rivets with my pos cam

thats perfect, I wouldnt trust the tweezers with the hole and screw for marking holes. but I would trust to do it that way.

Thanks for the pics.  I read a explanation before, but I was thinking I had to drill it with the trunnion hanging out of the vise.  I didn't think of just using this method to mark it.  A picture is worth a 1k words...

Do you use a similar method on the front trunnion? If so, what do you use to hold the front trunnion in the vise?

The tape trick works OK, but  I never get it perfect.

BTW, since you have all the best ideas, I was also wondering what method you use to form the heads on the rear trunnion rivots?

Thanks again.

I guess I missed this part but how do you know how to line up the holes on the receiver?  Did you measure it, use the "tape trick" or did you just "eye ball" it?

you can use this to do the front trunnion (i use tape tick with pract it works well )
if you wanna try it on the dront you need to do the same as you would for a uf rear trunnion

use another c-clamp to clamp onto the inside of the trunnion/block
then put your c-clamp in the vise

as for the rivets i use homade tools
a hammer
airhammer (moded bit)
and a 2x2x1/4 piece of flatstock with a divet drilled into it
ill see if i can get you some pic alittle later

Laying out the holes, drilling and riveting.

I'm preparing to try my first build with a Rommy kit on a GT receiver. Actually, me and a buddy are both going to do one. First time for both. We're no strangers to tools but neither of us have owned AK's before. I've never even stripped one. We depend heavily on guys like you sharing your knowledge. Much appreciated BTW.

the holes are already all there on a gt rec
you just have to rivet them
do you have access to a press ?

Thanks again for the info and pics socandyman.

The only other question is how much rivot do you need to make a decent/correct looking head?  The long ones I have are too long.  The head mushrooms out too far.

Also, how to you trim the rivots?  Grind them?

yep i grind them you need to take off about 3/16 in
