I "think" you can but I wanted to be sure. Can I use a GT 5.45x39 receiver shell to build a 5.56 (.223) AK-74? If so, what mods do I need to complete. The ejector?

Question: "Why dont you use the search feature?"

Answer: Because the damn search feature is limited to the last 30 days. Gee thats useful, Hell I can remember topics for 30 days. Its the old ones I need help with. But I guess its to save band-width or something. ...Since its so much more efficient to keep re-posting the same questions every month.

Arrrrggg.

I am also curious...  there was a post not long ago where a guy did build a 223 AK off a AK-74 but darned if I could find the post...  I would love to convert a Tantial to 223 or 300 Whisper using the SAR-3 mags

wait a second, I thought the only difference between a 7.62 and 5.45 receiver is the ejector length?

and isn't the 5.56 a little longer cartridge ?

The brass is much shorter on a 5.45 cartridge but OAL is pretty close to 5.56 because the bullet is so long.

so... that is why 5.54 magazine can be used for 223 saigas!!! (with a robinson? follower, and slight modifications, of course)

Thank you for the info...

I've been wanting to mess with scratch building a 223 frankenkrink pistol .. but wasn't sure what I could use as a receiver.

edit, and are the case heads on a 5.54x39mm, and a 223 the same? I thought that the 74's cartridge had the same head as a 47?

but I think someone else here built a 223 using a 74 bolt.. so I guess I was wrong?

AND are 74 and 47 carriers the same? interchangable?

Yes you can use the 74 recever to make the 223 hybred. You just need to get a 74 bolt and trunion and have a 223 barrel turned down to fit the 74 trunion.

Im using the 74 bolt/extractor with 223 brass. NO extraction problems what so ever.

ETA... Im using double circle 21 mags (74's) with a slight spring tweak..
