I am planning to do the change to a regular handguard also. I bought a AKM gas tube, I plan to shorten it, heat the gasblock end up and use a socket extention as a mandel to expand it to fit the gasblock. I won't get around to it till this weekend, I'll let you know how it goes.

I have shortended 2 bulgarian 74 tubes already with the cut and expand method. I didn't have to heat them up. I experamented with the cut off section first and it expanded fine with out heat but I have read of others that have had them crack.
I used a arbor press and 3/8 extension to get the flare started and a 12mm socket that had the right od on it to finish it up. |

I just modified a long gas tube for one of my AMD-65s today. I won't say it was a piece of cake, but it wasn't too hard to accomplish. I used a 3/8" socket extension to flare the end, it worked perfect, plus it gave me some "handle" to hold onto while I beat the extension into the red hot gas tube. I think my AMD-65 looks HOT with the wood furniture. The wood I used is from an SAR-3 I think.
