it sounds like you may well have the tools necessary to do the job. i am sure that you will have to fabricate some fixturing and blocking while you press the barrel in place and bucking bars for riveting against as you go.

in reality, this is not all that complex. it just requires some common sense, an eye for safe setups and most of the needed tooling can be made from small scrap pieces of steel found laying around the shop.

the ak is not "erector set easy"...as the ar15 obviously is. the ak is one of the more challenging home builds, but has been successfully attempted by hundreds of guys with less equipment than it sounds like you have access to.

your first ak is usually quite a learning expirience and you will probably want to do a second build in the future to improve upon your results by applying what you struggled thru on the first one.

first, make certain you buy a kit designed for a stamped (akm style) receiver. this saves you having to buy a trunnion to mount in the receiver (the trunnion is what the bbl. is pressed into).

the itm/oow receiver, available from ohio ordnance works, is probably the most popular model everyone is using these days. it retails for about $59.

for $200+, and a long wait, a much better hungarian receiver will soon be available again from globaltrades (aka arsenal usa, in texas).

both of these are stamped akm type receivers.

remember, it is always easier to built a stamped parts kit on a stamped style receiver. milled parts kit go together a little tougher on a stamped receiver, but can be done.
