What is the heaviest gauge an AK flat can be made of?

I have access to steel studs at work. I realize "mystery steel" is tricky and proper hardness is paramount. It is galvanized and I will remove that prior to any major work. I can choose from 18, 14, and 12. I'd like to go overkill. Suggestions?

I tried using a 1/16" inch thick bent blank once and had all kinds of problems getting parts to fit and work right. I gave up on that project.

Wonder how thick the receiver can get before you start running into problems. The slot in the bold carrier is just so big.
