What would you put in a small cleaning kit for an M4, only the most essential tools.  I want something attached to my gear for another trip to the sandbox.  What should I put in it, and what is a good pouch?

Have you checked out the Otis kits?  They make a kit specifically for the AR/M16 that comes in a molle pouch and has all the necessary ingredients.  In fact, there are plenty of Otis kits on fleabay

Take along a few cheap 1“-2” paint brushes.
